The following is the giving guide we use at Zion Lutheran Church for monthly donations to charities.
Charities of the Month
JANUARY
Benevolent Fund
Emergencies happen. And when emergencies happen it often becomes difficult to cover daily expenses. For this reason Zion has established the Benevolent Fund to help members when such emergencies occur. Through the use of the Benevolent Fund, members are able to pay a month’s rent, get a tank of gas, pay an electric bill, etc. The Fund has also been used to help with a medical expense, food shortage, clothing items and baby supplies. When an emergency happens members can contact the church to see if the Benevolent Fund can help them out.
FEBRUARY
Lutheran World Relief
Founded by Lutherans in the U.S.at the end of World War II, grounded in Lutheran theology and building on decades of experience, Lutheran World Relief tackles global poverty by helping people adapt to the challenges that threaten their livelihoods and well-being. They work with people based on need, regardless of race, religion or nationality.
They provide aid in emergencies and help families restore their lives. They partner with communities to build and grow rural economies. They break the cycle of poverty, so families and communities can thrive. Their goal is to help people build self‐sufficiency and create new community‐owned approaches to problem‐solving that will last long after our projects end.
MARCH
Mora Food Pantry
The Mora Food Pantry is an emergency food shelf providing each family it serves with at least 2 days’ worth of food. Donations may be brought to the food shelf (north entrance) on *Tuesday & Friday mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. They can also be dropped off at the church in the grocery cart in the narthex. These items are taken to the food pantry each week as well. If you need to contact the food pantry you may call 320-679-5513 during the same hours.
The “Second Harvest North Central Food Bank” is the major source of food for the Mora Food Pantry. Cash donations are especially welcomed because more food can be purchased by buying (in bulk) from suppliers. However, ALL non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated.
APRIL
Good Samaritan Fund
The Good Samaritan Fund is offered through the efforts of the Kanabec County Ministerial Association. This group helps people in the Mora area who suddenly find themselves needing a helping hand to get their lives back on track. The Ministerial Association is made up of several local churches (including Zion). They organize this mission to provide vouchers for fuel, and checks to the biller (business) for heating, utilities, rental assistance for individuals in Kanabec County.
MAY
Armed Forces Ministry
The LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces supports nearly 200 chaplains who represent the church on active duty, the reserves, the National Guard, and Civil Air Patrol. Chaplains meet the needs of military personnel and their families.
This ministry to the Armed Forces also assists and trains congregations through project Operation Barnabas. This project trains outreach to members and their families of those deployed or assisting those who have served to reintegrate back home with their families and community.
The Ministry by Mail program provides servicemen and women with regular copies of Portals of Prayer and the So Help Me God (a quarterly newsletter from LCMS) to those whose names have been submitted.
JUNE
Lutheran Island Camp
For nearly 70 years Lutheran Island Camp has been providing quality programs and facilities for families. Family programs are Christ-centered using devotions, worship and fellowship to nourish the spiritual needs of all participants. Various events include Mother/daughter events as well as Little Lambs and Sheep camps.

AUGUST
Kick Cancer to the Curb
Kick Cancer to the Curb is a non-profit group of volunteers who provide financial assistance to cancer patients living in Kanabec County to help off-set travel expenses, personal needs, medicines, etc. incurred during their cancer journey. Last year they helped at least 70 families. Should you wish to give a donation at any time (for example as a memorial) contact Faye Cayton (tenCate) at 602-330-4668. Your donations are always needed and appreciated.
SEPTEMBER
Zion Preschool
This educational program has been apart of our congregation for over 28 years. Our dedicated teachers offer a loving and Christ centered preschool for the children, ages 3 to 4 of our community. The students learn about Jesus during group time. They learn about the wonders of nature and the blessings of our families. They sing religious songs and say a table prayer before snacks. They celebrate Thanksgiving – giving thanks, Christmas – Jesus’ birthday, and Easter – Jesus’ resurrection. Zion Lutheran Preschool has built its curriculum around the philosophy of developmentally appropriate practice.
OCTOBER
Food for Friends (MHS Food Shelf)
Food for Friends was started in 2016 by Mora High School students to provide food and necessities to those students in need. There is also an elementary program to provide food over the weekends. Many donations of food and money are donated to Food for Friends throughout the year. In addition to food, these funds may also be used to support students in need of: birth certificates, drivers’ training, school supplies, and emergency needs.
NOVEMBER
Mora Crisis Pregnancy Center
The Mora Crisis Pregnancy Center offers a number of free services such as: pregnancy testing, parenting, goal setting, healthy relationship and dads’ parenting classes. In addition, they provide material aid (clothing closet – newborn to size 2). There is also an incentive program for anyone who is going to have a baby. The center is almost totally funded by donations, receiving only one small grant from another non-profit.
The center is located at 114 Maple Ave. W. Suite 2 Mora. Their phone number is 320-679-4493 and they are open M-W from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
DECEMBER
Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. All funds collected in Kanabec County stay in Kanabec County.
